For the second year in a row, four faculty from the SIU School of Architecture – myself, Shannon McDonald, Laura Morthland, and Robert Swenson – and a dedicated group of architecture and interior design students participated in the Cairo YouthBuild Grant. Although we continued to work on the design and construction of a residence in Cairo, this year we put significant effort into introducing the YouthBuild students to the work going on in the School of Architecture. The group came up from Cairo on two occasions and worked on projects with the SIU students. In these courses, design/build took on a new social dimension both at SIU and down on the jobsite in Cairo.
